It’s an old, hoary cliche that some people enter military service to escape from trouble with the law and straighten themselves out. And while it may be a cliche because it’s true; it’s also a two-part proposition. The potential soldier may enter military service to escape from trouble with the law, but they have to WANT to straighten themselves out to be successful. It’s the old “Lead a Horse to Water” thing — he’ll only drink if he wants to.
Evidently this guy was all up for the “military service to escape from trouble” thing, but less so on the “straighten himself out” part. From today’s Gary Post-Tribune
Man Faces Multiple Charges and AWOL
December 8, 2007; By James D. Wolf Jr. Post-Tribune correspondent
VALPARAISO — The last of six defendants charged with breaking into a rural Porter County house and beating a man with baseball bats had his initial hearing Friday and also was found to be absent without leave from the Army. Zakcary A. Kaiser, 18, of 142 E. 73rd Ave., Merrillville, went before Judge William Alexa in Porter County Superior Court to review the charges of confinement as a Class B felony, burglary as a Class B felony, battery as a Class C felony and criminal mischief as a Class D felony.
Alexa had to ask Kaiser to answer questions directly because of Kaiser’s attempts to ask about getting an Army lawyer to defend him. Alexa also asked Kaiser during the financial review if he thought the proceedings were funny.
Kaiser is in Porter County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond. He’ll also have to return to the Army to face charges of desertion. Kaiser told Alexa that he left the Army because his girlfriend was being threatened with rape, but Alexa silenced him.
They were charged Nov. 26 for breaking into a home on County Road 300N and striking a man who lived there, police records state. They also are accused of causing $6,250 of damage and theft. According to records, the incident was revenge for an earlier drug deal that had gone bad earlier in the night where the victim’s brother allegedly had Kendera beaten, and Kendera had some drugs taken from him.
Judge Bill Alexa is a Democrat with a liberal history with Child Molesters, but his Is, indeed, a veteran. This dumb kid just bit off more trouble than he can chew. Best of luck to him with that Prison Rape thing.
