You know, I’ve watched David Letterman for literally years. I watched him on NBC, and reveled when he harassed Jane Pauley on the set of the Today show. (Letterman and Pauley are both from Indiana, and both briefly worked at the same Indianapolis TV station.) I was upset when NBC didn’t give Letterman the Tonight Show after Johnny Carson retired, and exulted when he moved to CBS.
All of which was years ago. That’s a lot of water under that bridge.
In recent years I’ve watched less and less of Letterman as his lefty politics became more and more apparent. In the last year or so his disdain and occasionally frank anger at John McCain and Bill O’Reilly have been absolutely painful to watch.
His politics have even evolved into apparent vendettas. While 20 years ago his jokes about a public personality might have been a “running theme,” today the objects of his ire are exclusively right-wing politicians, and can be quite nasty at times.
Enter Sarah Palin; Governor of Alaska and former Republican Vice-Presidential Candidate. Here’s a clip from earilier this week, as Letterman attampts some lame humor at Palin’s expense:
In the course of this clip, Letterman:
- Calls Palin and Rudy Giuliana “Far, Far Right” Wingers.
- Implies Palin’s daughter is a prostitute in an Eliot Spitzer joke.
Then, there was this:
- Letterman jokes about Palin’s daughter being “knocked up” the Yankees player Alex Rodriguez, who is something of a player. (Letterman thought Palin was accompanied by her 18 year old daughter Bristol; instead it was her 14 year old daughter Willow (and near-lookalike for Bristol.)
- Which, of course, implies that (a) A-Rod is a dog, and that (b) he would sexually molest teenage girls. (Man, I don’t want to be anywhere near Letterman & A-Rod’s next meeting.)
The Governor responded on her Facebook page:
“Concerning Letterman’s comments about my young daughter (and I doubt he’d ever dare make such comments about anyone else’s daughter): ‘Laughter incited by sexually-perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some Hollywood/NY entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands – that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone’s daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.'”
– Governor Sarah Palin
First Dude Todd Palin got his licks in too:
“Any ‘jokes’ about raping my 14-year-old are despicable. Alaskans know it and I believe the rest of the world knows it, too.”
– Todd Palin
There’s another one-on-one meeting with Letterman I’d pay money to see — First Dude could take Letterman, easy. Maybe we could get A-Rod to bring his bat . . .
Any Liberals out there upset by that “joke”? Hey — if Letterman can joke about A-Rod statutorily raping Willow Palin, then I can joke about First Dude and A-Rod throwing a beatdown on David Letterman.
So then Letterman responds the next night with a non-apology “apology,” which is more like defensive sarcasm to me:
“I would love to have her on the show,” says Dave.
The Palin’s respond again at Sarah Palin’s Facebook page:
“The Palins have no intention of providing a ratings boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show.
Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman.”
Whether they’re turning the tables on Letterman and implying he’s a pedophile too; or if they’re suggesting Willow would kick Letterman’s butt — either way Letterman ignored the reference.
Meanwhile on MSNBC, Contessa Brewer tried to rip apart a Los Angeles radio host John Ziegler who Palin talked to the day prior; and he’s ready for her. Note how she tries to obviously steer the conversation (interrogation) towards Palin’s “having her feelings hurt” over the “slutty stewardess look” crack, but Ziegler is having none of it:
And then she gets offended and cuts off his microphone. Great. That puts her on a par with Glenn Beck. Stay classy, Contessa.
(And obviously, another good reason NOT to watch MSNBC, as if Keith Olbermann wasn’t reason enough . . . )
Now, here’s the thing that’s really bothering me. When did it become okay to attack the families of the candidates?
The nixon girls were treated with polite respect. The Ford boys were all adults, but Amy Carter was strictly off-limits. You couldn’t even photograph her without Rosalyn Carter’s permission. Same thing with Chelsea Clinton. Bill O’Reilly observed that it would not be tolerated today with the Obama girls, either.
But those Bush girls were the first time you began to see stories about their “wildness” (particularly Jenna). And when Bristol Palin announced her pregnancy, it was open season.
And people wonder why people don’t respect the media anymore?
Because, let’s face it: Free Love was a founding tenet of the 60’s Flower Power Revolution. Remember “The Summer of Love?” They weren’t talking about Goodwill Towards All men, brother.
Free Love is one of the basic, cornerstone tenets that Liberals base all their other decisions on. If it promotes Free love, they’re for it. Teen Birth Control? Good. Abortion? Good. Abstinence? no, no — that’s bad, bad, bad.
Letterman? He lived with his baby-mama for years before marrying her — so Liberals love that about him.
When Bristol Palin chose NOT to abort her baby, and to preach abstinence, she became a moving target to liberals. She was a living example of traditional values. Same with Carrie Prejean; when she espoused traditional Christian view of marriage to Gay advocate Perez Hilton, it not only cost her her potential crown as Miss USA, but they harried her until the Miss California pageant fired her yesterday.
Meghan McCain with her alternative lifestyle and filthy mouth — heck, Libs love that.
Threaten a Liberal’s sexual Freedom at your peril. Ask Bristol and Carrie.
