On “The View” yesterday Barbara Walters and the girls got into their impressions of Sacha Baron Cohen’s new alleged comedy, Bruno.” (For those not aware, “Bruno” is an Austrian TV host who is gay — and that’s quite the understatement.
Watch the whole clip. It’s not every day you get to see Whoopi Goldberg discussing 12-foot penises on broadcast TV:
Okay; a few comments before my own experience here.
A commenter at the Jezebel.com article didn’t care much for it, either. In fact, most of the commenters found it alternately disturbing or annoying — if they weren’t :
I really had high hopes for this movie. (SOME GRAPHIC SPOILERS BELOW)
Within the first ten minutes you get engrossed in a BDSM scene, the penises are blurred and the butt-holes, but it even puts Hentai to shame. Its really graphic, not very funny, and they also ruined my idea of a good time with a machine that has a sex toy attached that makes the basic in-out motion. I am pretty sure they also blurred out a fisting attachment too.
Barbara got it sooooo right, there is a scene where Bruno was going to have a test group to screen for his potential TV show and you see a huge penis flopping up and down and then doing circles akin to what tassels do on boob pasties.
Bruno has this whole thing that he is looking for love, but he considers having a classic BDSM slave love. Then there are even more graphic BDSM scenes, they must have used like 100 pieces of bondage equipment/gear etc.
I have NO problem with homosexuality, but I almost felt that “Love” portrayed in this movie was only Sado-machochistic lust and also mostly superficial that it was an insult to true gay love.
Very Very disappointing follow-up to Borat which I felt revealed a lot of anti-semitism amongst other prejudices.
Twitter commentators were of a similar mind; didn’t care much for it, . . .
i saw 5mins of bruno wasnt really feeling it shit was gay i walked out the movie theaters and went to see another movie anybody like bruno?
. . . or were busy attacking those who didn’t like it:
JJMarino Ukraine banned Bruno because it damages the morals of society. This from the country whose main export is stripers that blow u for an xtra 50
Nice. You kiss your mom with that mouth?
I haven’t been to see Bruno, and don’t really have any inclination to now. Box Office Mojo has noted that the grosses for the movie have steadily fallen off every day:
So, the movie has no legs. As more and more people see the movie and word of mouth (you should pardon the pun) gets around, the grosses will continue to dive for the basement.
My personal experience with Borat; while I’m not planning to see the movie anymore (and, yes, I was at one time) aco-worker did — and walked out within the first 20 minutes. The manager couldn’t give her a refund (first-run first weekend policy of the chain she saw the movie at), but he did give her two passes for every person wanting a refund.
On the Friday she saw Bruno the movie was playing on four screens at the sixteen-plex. Saturday it was on two screens. As of this morning — just one. Screens in San Antonio have decreased by about a third. Strangely, Box Office mojo’s site doesn’t record a loss of screens, but per-screen income has dropped 80% over the weekend.
Don’t waste your time. Go see Harry Potter instead — or catch a third showing of Star Trek.
