Got a note last week from an author friend of mine on quitting the AARP. Thought I’d pass it on:
It was probably this total hemorrhaging of geezers & geezettes that halted AARP from their outright endorsement of OBAMACARE; an endorsement Obama claimed anyway.
I just called AARP at their HQ in Washington DC (866-687-2277) and attempted to quit what I thought was MY “Geezer Lobby.”
After hanging on for ten minutes a harried, but polite, young man came on the line. I announced my wife and I were resigning after perhaps 20 years of membership.
I sensed panic on his part when he said “But we’ll send you a tote bag and give you 12 months of free membership” if I would stay on as an AARP member. I told him that I was already paid through 2014 but to disregard that, cancel us immediately, and unsubscribe me from the AARP monthly magazine.
“And WHY are you quitting?” he asked VERY SINCERELY.
“I had wrongly assumed,” I told him ” that AARP was lobbying for first class health care for it’s members in their later years. But AARP’s present path would lead to a diminution of health care for me and my wife. Why would I support that?”
He finally agreed to drop me & my wife from the rolls and I sensed I was just one in a long queue of AARP ship jumpers he had screened this morning.
AARP HAS been contributing to ad campaigns pushing universal health care.
Frankly, I am late in severing ties with AARP. Their ever more leftist turn in recent years has been so dramatic I would not have blinked had Jane Fonda showed up as an AARP Magazine Cover Girl one month.
But just think, I coulda had a tote bag.
